Two Worlds, One Adventure

Perhaps the most romantic evocation on the planet, Zanzibar’s turquoise waters and white sand beaches offer the quintessential tropical paradise. Few know about its equally stunning neighbour, Saadani, a short hop by plane across the Zanzibar channel. Saadani’s wild, deserted beaches are home to baboons, breeding green turtles, and even the odd lion. Elephants gather in significant numbers in the thick vegetation of Elephant Island, before traversing the open salt flats into Saadani National Park.

Zanzibar is a tapestry of turquoise waters, spice-scented streets, and vibrant island life.

Dive into the coral-rich waters around Mnemba Atoll. Wander the UNESCO-listed alleys of Stone Town, where African, Arab, and European influences blend in every doorway. Then unwind on Zanzibar’s iconic white-sand beaches, where crystal-clear tides reflect the island’s rhythm of life. From culture to coastline, Zanzibar offers depth, beauty, and stories waiting to be discovered.

Saadani is where the wild meets the waves. East Africa’s only national park on the ocean’s edge.

Wake to the calls of colobus monkeys and the splash of hippos in the Wami River. Explore a rare landscape where elephants and lions roam just metres from the surf, and conservation efforts protect both land and sea. Whether tracking wildlife on safari or drifting past mangroves by boat, Saadani offers raw beauty, rich biodiversity, and a glimpse into the future of coastal conservation.

The Zanzibari Sustainability Champions

Developed by our partners, A Tent With A View, in collaboration with local communities, the Sustainability Champions Programme supports young Zanzibaris to become leaders in climate action and sustainable development. These Champions, students, volunteers, and grassroots activists, are working at the frontline of environmental change, tackling issues like plastic pollution, food waste, deforestation, and community resilience.

During this Red Kite Adventure, you’ll work alongside Zanzibar’s inspiring Sustainability Champions on a powerful environmental project. You will be helping the children to create a short film highlighting the serious issue of waste and pollution washing up from Zanzibar onto the shores of Saadani National Park. From visiting affected coastal areas to contributing ideas and content through interviews, visuals, and storytelling, you’ll play a vital role in shaping a message that matters. The finished film will be presented to the Ministry for Environment of Zanzibar to raise awareness and push for real change. It’s a unique opportunity to collaborate across cultures, take meaningful action, and contribute to a movement for a cleaner, more sustainable future.

The Saadani Lion & Turtle Conservation Project

On this adventure, you will have the unique opportunity to learn alongside 'A Tent With A View's' conservation teams in Saadani.

The Lion Team looking for tracks
The Lion Team looking for tracks
In their words:

"Saadani National Park is a microcosm of most of the issues relating to conservation around the world, both on land and in the sea. It is under pressure from charcoal burning, pastoralism and poaching of animals on land. It also faces pressure from coastal erosion, coral reef destruction and ocean plastics along its beachfront.

We have built a dedicated research centre at our Simply Saadani camp from which we operate a Green Turtle project, now in its 20th year, and a new lion project started in 2024. Studying the unique coastal lions of Saadani will bring more attention to the park and provide a catalyst to looking at the wider habitat conflict issues which surround it and many other protected areas around the world."

Guided by their expert rangers and conservationists, you’ll help record lion movement patterns, learn about tracking techniques, and understand the challenges of human-wildlife co-existence in coastal ecosystems. Along the shoreline, you’ll assist with turtle nest monitoring, explore hatchling protection methods, and learn how community engagement plays a vital role in preserving these endangered species.
