Day 2 - Tbilisi: Old Town Streets, Historic Views & Georgian Hospitality
Sunday 21st June
We explore the capital of Georgia, where layers of history and everyday life sit side by side. Walking through the old districts of Tbilisi, terraced along the hillsides, we pass narrow streets lined with colourful houses, carved wooden balconies and striking contrasts between traditional and modern architecture. Our walk begins at Metekhi Church, dating from the 13th century, set above the river with sweeping views across the old town.
From here, we continue through winding historic streets before taking a short cable-car ride for panoramic views across the city, arriving near the ancient Narikala Fortress. The walk then leads down into the historic sulphur bath district, built around the natural hot springs that gave Tbilisi its name, offering a glimpse into one of the city’s oldest traditions.
After time to rest, we gather in the evening for a welcome dinner at a renowned local restaurant, owned and run by a talented woman chef, where contemporary Georgian cuisine is enjoyed in a relaxed and sociable setting.

Accompanied by our local host, we select ingredients for lunch before continuing to her home.
In her kitchen, we prepare traditional Georgian dishes together, learning techniques and recipes shaped by family tradition and hospitality. Lunch is shared at the table, accompanied by Georgian wine and conversation, offering an intimate insight into local life. The afternoon is free to relax or explore independently.

Nearby, we visit Bodbe Nunnery, a site of deep spiritual importance and home to a community of women nuns who live a largely self-sustaining life. From here, we continue to a rural village for a home-hosted lunch, welcomed by a local woman who has dedicated herself to preserving family traditions, from gardening and cooking to music and hospitality.
Later in the day, we visit a traditional wine cellar in Kondoli to taste natural wines made using age-old methods before continuing to Telavi for the night.

En route, we stop at the Ananuri architectural complex, dramatically set above a reservoir and showcasing fine examples of Georgian stone carving.
Arriving in the mountain town of Stepantsminda, we visit a small felt-making workshop run by a local craftswoman who continues this ancient tradition. Guided by her, we create our own felt pieces before enjoying homemade jams and traditional Georgian tea.

Today is dedicated to the dramatic mountain landscapes surrounding Stepantsminda. A scenic walk leads through valleys and open slopes to the iconic Gergeti Trinity Church, set high above the town with wide views across the Caucasus and, weather permitting, Mount Kazbegi.
For lunch, we are welcomed into a local home, where we prepare traditional khinkali dumplings together with our hostess. More than a meal, this is a ritual of shared preparation and hospitality.
